The newly approved apprenticeship programme represents a government-approved route to join the private security industry. It’s not just a welcome mat for newcomers; it’s a ladder for those in employment who seek career progression.
The apprenticeship will provide funded opportunities for professional training in core security skills, and allow employees to choose a specialism:
- Operational Security Operative
- Cash and Valuables in Transit
- Mobile Security Patrol
- Security Control Room Operative

About Paul Lawton-Jones
Having worked in the security industry for 28 years (starting as a security officer and then up to Director level), Paul founded Mercury Training Services 18 years ago with the emphasis of helping others to achieve their goals in the security industry.
Before Mercury, Paul specialised in communications as a submariner in the Royal Navy before leaving to become a security officer.
Mercury Training is a national training provider specialising in the security and facilities sector delivering security related apprenticeships to over 120 clients. We have recently been awarded the Ministry of Defence Guarding Service contract for their security apprenticeships.
More recently, Paul helped the security trailblazer team to develop the new Level 2 Professional Security Operative apprenticeship that recently went live.
About Jane Farrell
Jane is a Chartered Security Professional (CSyP) and the former Chair of the IPSA. She brings a wealth of experience in the training arena. Jane has extensive skills in connecting to front-line teams and is passionate about ensuring training programmes are accessible and teams are motivated and engaged. Diversity and inclusion are key attributes for Jane, evidenced through receiving the prestigious Women in Security Industry Award 2013 and the Transformational Leader category at the Northern Power Women Awards 2017 for her work in promoting gender balance in the industry. More recently, Jane was recognised in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2020.
